The Naughty Entrepreneur Checklist: 40 Reasons Why You Are Not Seeing Results

If you are wondering about what the Naughty Entrepreneur Checklist is, it’s a checklist of all the things you “should not” do or ways you “should not” be if you want to move forward in your endeavors. I put the words “should not” in quotations marks because what you should or should not do is subjective.

You be the judge…

However, if you see yourself falling into most of the circumstances listed here, there’s a good chance you are not getting the results you want with your online business.

So without further ado, here is The Naughty Entrepreneur Checklist:

Entrepreneur Checklist

If you are guilty of any of these naughty behaviors, don’t worry. It just means you got it a bit backwards and we have to turn things around a bit. I myself still fall into several of these old bad habits! Still working on the saying NO part. It’s a work in progress. ;-)

But lets work on it shall we? Here’s your homework assignment.

Action Plan:

  1. Either print out this page or click on the link below to access the pdf version of the checklist to print out.
  2. Start checking off the areas that you feel you’ve been a naughty entrepreneur.
  3. Make it a commitment to do the exact opposite of what has not been working for you!
  4. Hang it up somewhere readily visible to refer to it constantly to ensure you do not fall back into old habits.

Naughty Entrepreneur Checklist PDF

Note: Keep a copy of this checklist on your computer. As you begin tackling some of these issues, you will have less and less of them checked off. So I would suggest printing out a new copy each month and monitoring your progress.

So what about it? Are you a naughty entrepreneur?

Please share this post and help other entrepreneurs tackle their unproductive and ineffective habits!

Update: Julie Sahud Weishaar from Say It With Video, created a video out of this checklist. Very cool! Check it out.

  1. Great checklist, I can relate to quite a few of those boxes :) On one side I get a bit sad I have so many ticked, ont he other I think great, been there, done it, now I know a few more things.

  2. Scott says:

I am new to internet marketing and this is a whole new world for me. I have to say that I have said some of these things to myself or out loud in the past 3 months. Thought it was just me. Thanks for the help and tips! They are wonderful!!

    • Michele says:

      Hi Scott,

Yeah, I’ve had many of these conversations myself. The good thing is that with practice you get better at tackling them. ;-)

      Thanks for stopping in!

  3. DiTesco says:

Guilty as charged, on (nearly) all counts, lol. I am so naughty that I just printed it out and checked everything on the list. The way I am doing this is “backwards”, I will uncheck items on the list as I get rid of them :) My main problem will probably fall on everything related to, too many tasks, no time, and too busy… I really like this list, makes us focus on things that we usually tend to forget :)

    • Michele says:

      Hi DiTesco,

Somehow I’m not to surprised at the “too many tasks, no time and too busy” excuses. ;-) But somehow or another you seem to pull it off. You are talented for sure!

I think putting things down on paper really allow you to take stock at what’s working and not working.

Now start working on clearing that list! ;-)

  4. Kristi Hines says:

I have some work to do as well, but I did say no to several things today, and it felt great! :)

    • Michele says:

      Hi Kristi,

I’m sure it did! I’m with you. I have had so many requests that last couple of months that I kept saying yes to. Then I started realizing that I was beginning to drop the ball because I just couldn’t do it all. This is when I realized that I had to start saying no. It’s been a huge weight off my shoulders… as I’m sure it has been with you. ;-)

Thanks for stopping by my dear!

  5. HI Michele

Like your post. You have listed all that most of use face. I have saved it for tonight, as some family is coming over right now. Tonight is the night to ponder and make a list to do.

Make it a super profitable day for yourself

    Fran A

    • Michele says:

      Hi Fran,

Have fun with the family…that’s definitely a priority! And good with the list. I hope you have very few checked off, but if not no worries. Easy fix. ;-)

  6. Jackie says:

Michele, you got me too.. More ticks than blanks I’m afraid.

Thanks for the list, its a great reminder to pull things back into line and priortize whats really important to build a thriving business.

    • Michele says:

You’re very welcome Jackie! No worries. The first step is always seeing what’s not working (and that’s huge). Now it’s time to turn refocus and proceed with fierce velocity. ;-)

      Ciao!

  7. Stuart says:

Thanks for this. I’m printing it and putting it up on the wall.

  8. manish2010 says:

    THANK YOU and GOD BLESS

  9. Sangram says:

  10. Barry Wells says:

Hi Michele, Firstly thanks for the help in highlighting Dee Ann Rice’s blog post regarding her blog being hijacked. It was very good of you and really appreciated this end “Thank you”.

    Onto your checklist:

I started off well, but soon tripped up on a few items and once that happened It kind of snow balled and the ticks grew and grew :(

I have printed out the checklist and will have them ticked off and in my face shortly, and then tomorrow I’ll try and work on the dodgey areas…. That “No” is a hard one though isn’t it….

Thanks again Michele, for the help yesterday and for the post today.

    Respect and Regards, Barry

    • Michele Welch says:

Any time Barry…really! LOL so lots of checks huh? It’s all good. It’s just about taking stock of what may or may not be working, you know?

What I didn’t divulge is the underlining reasons of why we do this. But that’s a discussion for another time. ;-)

      Ciao!

  11. Terry Conti says:

    Hi Michele,

Thanks so much opening our eyes to this. No one is perfect and this list is very handy to have around in your face so you can see what you must be doing instead of having your brain telling you otherwise.

This is very good to get your brain in the right direction.

    Terry Conti

    • Michele Welch says:

      Hi Terry,

You are absolutely right. It all about putting our attention on whats NOT working. And sometimes the best way to do that is to have it staring at you right in the face!

Best of luck with your endevours. :-)

  12. Extreme John says:

I can so relate to some of the items on the checklist. It’s always good to step back once in a while and re-evaluate yourself what can you do to improve not just the business but also yourself – keeping on the right track.

    • Michele Welch says:

      Hey John,

I agree. It’s always about going back to the basics. Just revisiting the fundamentals, you know?

Glad to see you are right on track. ;-)

  13. Hey Michele,

This is a nice list to re-evaluate yourself from. I can relate to many of these, and it’s nice to see it in print. Many of the things I can relate to I haven’t really thought about until just now. Now that I see the things I need to work on it’s up to me to better myself.

I believe my biggest problem right now is thinking people are going to come to me. I have to get back on track and expand word with different methods. What would you say is your biggest problem from the list?

    God bless,
    William Veasley

    • Michele Welch says:

Haha, great question William. Well at one point or another many of them were an issue. Thankfully, not so many today.

However there are a few nasty culprits that keep on surfacing. Mainly taking on too many tasks, following shiny objects and saying NO! But I’m getting better. ;-)

I definitely think you are the right track. As long as you are clear on your target market, everything will fall into line. You def have the talent and the personality. ;-)

      Stay cool!

      • Hey Michele,

Thanks for the kind words. I believe for most people pretty much all of these were a problem at one time or another. Everyday I’m trying to stay focused and keep working on producing new articles. Hopefully you’ll see me around the blogosphere here pretty soon! ( :

I also have the problem of trying to take on too many task, but I try to focus on what’s most important to me right then and there.

        Just my 2 cents.

        Keep working hard!

        God bless,
        William Veasley

  14. Great and very helpful list. The problem in my case is that i’m guilty on more than half the issues here…
It is very helpful though to see all the points you have to take care on a clear list and try to fix various issues. I’m sure that most entrepreneurs knows about the problem but never had the time to write down all this issues and (most important according my opinion) try to fix all (or some…) of them.
I already print out the list, put it on a place where i can see it and i start fight to eliminate the most important issues!

  15. Robert Miras says:

Wow how nice of them all list! I really appreciate them and relate my self on them because I found myself on those list- a lot of them. I would definitely print some copy of these, thank you.

  16. Hi Michele,

Yes, i can be a naughty entrepreneur, so after i get through with this comment I shall print out your list and hang it so I can see it daily. thank you for keeping me on track. You are very much appreciated.\
    Blessing to you,
    Debbie

  17. Trish Jones says:

This is a great checklist!!I found myself on that checklist…Thanks for posting it…

    • Michele Welch says:

My pleasure Trish. Now work on getting some of those check marks down. ;-)

      Ciao!

  18. Dee Ann Rice says:

    Michele,

    What a great check list.

I have printed mine out and went though and checked the boxes that I need to work on.

I did not have very many however, I may be being to generous with myself. May have to rethink it as time goes on.

I have enough checked to start working on though. Think this is an on going task as I will always need to improve on something.

    Great post.

    Dee Ann Rice

    • Michele says:

      Hi Dee Ann,

Great to know you have very little to work on… you are definitely ahead of the game.

But yes, I agree there is always ways for us to improve and grow. That’s the wonderful thing about being human. ;-)

Appreciate you taking the time to stop in. I hope to see you around again!

  19. Evan Griffin says:

Hi Michele…Thanks for the checklist you have given us…one more thing i like your blog is the man on the picture.lol

    • Michele says:

      Hi Evan,

LOL, yes pretty cool pic. Now that’s a trick! ;-)

Thanks for stopping by and good luck with the checklist.

  20. Kalen says:

The very first points illustrate the problem of the ego. This can be an entrepreneur’s ally or worst enemy if it isn’t kept in check. I find the “objects point” is pretty pervasive as well. I know what it is like to get distracted these days and how hard it is to stay focused, especially during summertime in California. Every time I want to go for a hike or something I need to remind myself what I am trying to accomplish in the long run.

    • Michele says:

LOL, I hear you Kalen. I’m enjoying the beginning of summer here too. With 2 little ones always wanting to go to the pool, it’s a challenge staying focused for sure. Lot’s of late nights right now. ;-)

  21. “Follow shiny Objects” LOL I seriously once considered starting a blog called ‘TheMagpieBlogger’ due to my (and the IM niche as a whole) obsession with following the next big thing.
Not sure what a Magpie is?

Well that’s just great – how bad was my joke then??!

Great post Michele – really great post!
I have printed out the checklist and will work on rubbing out the tick I have now placed next to every single – oh look a pop up, gotta go…

    • Michele Welch says:

LOL, you are one funny man Alex!

Magpie?? You mean the crow? Just kidding ;-)
I’m sure it would get LOTS of visits! Why not just embrace it and find a way to make it work… hmmm, brings up some interesting ideas. Oops, I think I just fell back into the “take on too many tasks” category. ;-)

Yeah, shiny object syndrome is a tough one. I just want to soak it all up, ya know?

Thanks for stopping in my dear. Always a good chuckle!

  22. Michelle,

Thanks for the checklist. I downloaded it and was really quite surprised at some of my answers. Although I can see why those things can stop progress, I manage to keep on doing them…insanity is the correct term for that.

I like having this checklist on my desk top. It will be fun to see what I will correct in the next month.

    • Michele Welch says:

      Hi Sheila,

I’m glad you printed it out. I find the only way I can truly focus on things, is if it’s staring me in my face.

My checklist, my marketing plan & Daily project sheet… three things staring at me every day.

Don’t get me wrong. I sometime waver. But I’m getting better. ;-)

  23. Michele – this is just too good :) Can we add “My dog ate my homework”? LOL Thanks so much for this list. I am sure we can ALL relate to too many of them.

    • Michele Welch says:

LOL, brings me back to highschool Julie. Although I don’t recall getting away with that excuse back then either. ;-)

      Glad you liked it!

  24. Debra Saad says:

Hi…Great checklist here!!!Hoping you can post more related blogs…

  25. Cindy Tindle says:

Wow! That is quite a comprehensive list of things NOT to do to be successful.

I think for most netpreneurs these two would be on the top of the list:

    I don’t market my business.
I expect people to find me.

Many people expect traffic to show up at their website miraculously.

    • Michele says:

LOL, I have to confess Cindy; I was that way when I started my first online store 4 years ago. I thought the day I went live, people would just flood in. I learn quick (thankfully) that that is not the case. Grow pains can be a good thing. ;-)

  26. Tim says:

Great checklist, if slightly disheartening! I definitely tick more than my share of the boxes.

It is difficult though, isn’t it? It’s hard to get the balance right between taking consistent action while not repeating actions that are not effective. Maybe they aren’t working because you are not doing them consistently? Or maybe they just don’t work…You just don’t know when you are starting out.

As for mentors, if you get a good one, great, but if you find one of the more common dodgy ones, you’ll definitely not have any money to actually invest in your business!

  27. Jen Jenkins says:

As an entrepreneur you have to be in constant reevaluation of your business and your strategy. This list is a great way to both laugh at yourself and really take an inventory of things you probably need to work on.
