Facebook Tagging: Still A Tried & True Marketing Favorite

Facebook-taggingThere’s been a lot of focus lately on Facebook, especially with the implementation of the new changes with it’s Pages.  The added capability of being able to now comment on other business pages using your business page profile as a marketing tool is huge for many.

However, we can’t forget and should take full advantage of one tried and true favorite marketing tactic – tagging.

One of the many neat features about Facebook and it’s networking capabilities is the ability for it’s users to tag friends when you are referencing them on photos, video, articles, etc. This is great on a personal level but also a great marketing and social tactic at the business level.

It’s social sharing at it’s best. Think about it for a moment. You have a business page (or even a profile page if you are your brand) and you post someones article, product page, video etc., on your page. In turn you tag that person who’s content you’ve shared.

What do you think may be the result of this?

Hopefully you’ve answered things such as the person/business visiting your page and thanking you for the mention. Maybe they in turn will like your posting and share it with their friends. And just maybe they will do the same for you in the future. ;-)

I also believe what you put out in the world, you get back ten-fold. If you want more people sharing your content and mentioning you, then share theirs.

So let’s get down to it…

How to tag someone on Facebook

If you’ve haven’t done this before or didn’t know how, you are going to be surprised how super simple it is!

All you need to do is include the “@” symbol before the persons name in your status update box. So as you type, your contacts name begins to show up.

tagging on facebook

Note: Once you select your friends name, the @ sign will disappear.

no @ sign shows up

At the moment you can only tag someones profile page or business page, if you are friends with them or have “liked” their page. This makes sense as these are people you are connected to within your network.

Seriously? How simple was that? Now get out there and start tagging!

What about it? Have you used Facebook tagging as a marketing strategy?

  1. I love this feature of being able to tag someone in your post. I use it all of the time. I think it’s an easier way of having a conversation on Facebook and you get the subject’s attention faster.

When using it with my business page, I find that it’s very helpful in directing people back to your page instead of posting a link on another page.

I wish more people understood how these features work!

I think this is a great (and ethical) way of using tagging in facebook. Well done :-)

      Hi Dino,

I agree. It’s important to market but has to be tasteful. This is definitely a good way to go and at the same time allows you to share other valuable content.

Thanks for stopping in. All the best! :-)

  3. Hey Michele,

I remember when I used to be active on facebook people used to tag me all the time. Whenever you have someone else in a picture with you, then your always supposed to tag them. That gives them a link back to their profile, so that anyone wanting to add them will have a easy quick link. It is a brillant way to get some interlnking going on. I used to tag people all the time for the fun of it, but I no longer use Facebook.

    God bless,

      William my dear,

How are you? You don’t use Facebook? Surprised! Any particular reason you gave up that platform?

  4. Dana says:

Nice idea to get attention from targeted Facebook users. I never used Facebook tagging before since I do not know if it is very easy to use. So, thanks for your article, I know it is easy to use Facebook tagging now.

    • Michele says:

      Hi Dana,

You’re welcome. Yeah, I just recently started using this as a marketing tool as oppose to personal use. Just made sense from a business perspective to maximize my efforts, ya know? ;-)

      Great hearing from you!

  5. Michelle, I’m always looking for new ways to grow engagement on Facebook and this is a great idea. Thanks, I will be using it for sure.

I moved away from tagging some time back because it was mostly friends tagging others in photos, which I found a bit pointless. Now this approach makes a lot of sense.

      Hi John,

Just like me to taking friendly tagging of friends photos and seeing how I can apply it to my business page…LOL. But as entrepreneurs I guess we always have to take tactics such as these and find ways to market our business. FB is such a powerful platform. Only makes sense to take advantage of these simple features.

Good luck with your Facebook tagging! :-)

I am really surprised as to how easy this was Michele. Believe it or not, FaceBook has still a lot of hidden “treasures” that I am not familiar with. Thanks to this kind of “how to’s”, it makes everything a whole lot easier. Simple indeed, but very effective and powerful. So that’s how you did it :)

    • Michele says:

      Hi DiTesco,

I agree, FB does have a host of hidden treasures. It’s much like and onion, you just keep peeling away. Figured if I’m going to write about tagging, might as well tag a great article and use it as an example. ;-)

      Talk soon.
