I’m frequently asked by those looking to start their first online business, how do they start and what software should they be using.
This is a great question because there are hundreds of different options at your finger tips, but deciding on which one to use is not so simple…well not if you don’t know what you are looking for.
Ever heard of the expression, you don’t know what you don’t know. Well, this is how it is for many people first starting out with their online business. If you never built a website before, how are you know what you don’t know. Sound confusing? I bet.
Well, this is when it boils down to taking other peoples advice on where to start, how to get started and when to rock and roll. My suggestion to others asking about how to create a website is always this, USE WORDPRESS!
OK, so I’m a bit of a WordPress Groupy…I admit. That is because after using this software for several of my sites and well as for creating and developing sites for clients, I just can’t see why use anything else.
And let me just state for the record, I’ve used other software such as Zen-cart, Blogger, Drupal and Joomla. I’ve even went crazy enough for a bit and thought I’d create my own site from scratch using HTML! That did not go so well.
They are all great applications as well, but in the overall scheme of themes, they just seem to fall short in comparison to WordPress.
OK, why all the fuss about WordPress, you ask? Well let me bullet point the benefits to this software and you decide if it’s for you.
- It’s FREE! OK, free is not always better, but in this case IT IS!
- It has an unbelievable support system through the use of it’s forum as well as the thousands of blogs out there giving their own support on the software.
- It is customizable up the jing-jang. The possibilities that you can do with the software are only limited by your imagination.
- It has thousands of plugins that will help you customize your site as you want it.
- Did I say it’s FREE? Oh, I did? OK, just making sure you are paying attention.
- It can be used as a blog or a static website. What I mean is that it can be configured so that the home page as well as other pages such as the About Us, Contact, etc., are static pages.
- It can be used if you are looking to offer physical products, ebooks, services, a general personal blog or information site.
Need I go on? OK, I will.
- Little to no html knowledge needed to get started.
- Paying someone to set a WordPress site is substantially inexpensive compared to a having someone create a website from scratch.
- You can have your website up and running literally within a day!
- There are thousands of beautiful, professional looking already-made WordPress templates to choose from.
I am sure there are more benefits to this software that I have not covered, but I think you get the idea. So if deciding which software to use has been stopping you, now there are no excuses… start here. This is one of those things that if you don’t know what you don’t know then rely on those who do!

Hi Michele,
I am a huge fan of WordPress. It's the only blogging software which I've used. Great functionality, awesome plug-ins and ease of use.
Like yourself I highly recommend it.

Hi Michele,
I started off using blogger, but migrating to WordPress is probably the most wisest decision i ever made. I haven't look back ever since. The functions and plugins are unlimited and i am really glad that i decided to switch.
@Lye @Ryan Thanks for stopping by guys and lending a voice to more evidence of this powerful software!
Yep, wordpress is the premium of all services, because it’s “free,” everyone can build upon it, which is why it’s so great.
Great post
Great to hear from you Peter…thanks for stopping by!
I had started off with Blogger a couple of years ago, and then even though I wanted to shift to WP, but I was unable to do so because of lack of funds. Then finally I started a new blog a few months ago, and since then, I am just loving the WordPress software. I have been recommending it to everybody on the forums and other places where I see a question like “Blogger or WordPress?”
Hi Sourav,
I’m glad you made the switch! Isn’t WordPress fun?
Thanks for stopping by.
Hi Michele,
Another great post! I love WordPress too. It can be as simple or as highly evolved as you want it to be plus the search engines seem to like it too.
Oh my! Can’t believe I forgot to mention that one! That is ANOTHER key advantage to using WordPress.
Thanks for your input Benin.
No problem at all. Thanks

very nice info …
Hi Michele
Looks as though you are preaching tothe converted.
I used to be a static site man… then I saw WordPress.
Never looked back.
Great themes out there that saves you weeks of design and coding and total flexibility when it comes to adding posts and pages.
Wordpress… love it!
Hi Keith,
“Looks as though you are preaching to the converted.” aaahhh, wish that were true. You don’t know how many people I come across that either don’t use it or don’t even know what WordPress is.
Good to know that most of my commentators are WordPress users though…makes for an easier conversation. =)
Thanks for stopping by!
Yeah, WordPress allows people with little or no experience setting up and designing websites to create fully optimized sites fast. Not only do search engines love WordPress, but all the different plug-ins makes your life ten times easier.
Also, you don’t need to use advanced software like Gimp to design your site because like you said there are thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands free ready made WordPress templates at your finger tips to choose from. Anyone starting an online business should definitely start with wordpress, no doubt.
